Frequently Asked Questions

Exploring therapy can raise many questions. Here is clear information regarding what to expect, telehealth logistics, privacy, and getting started.

First-Time Therapy & What to Expect

I've never been to therapy before. What is a typical session like?

Therapy is a collaborative, confidential conversation tailored entirely to your goals. There are no test questions or pop quizzes. In a typical session, we will discuss what is currently on your mind, explore emotional patterns, and develop practical coping strategies. You set the pace, and we work together as a team.

What if I don't know what to talk about or where to start?

That is completely normal! You don't need to have a polished speech or clear answers prepared. Feeling scattered or uncertain is often why people seek therapy in the first place. I will ask gentle, open-ended questions to help guide our conversation and explore what feels most important to you.

Will I be forced to talk about painful topics before I am ready?

No. Your safety and comfort are paramount. You maintain full control over what you share and when you share it. Our initial sessions focus on building trust, establishing safety, and setting goals. We will only explore deeper or challenging topics when you feel grounded and ready.

Do I need to be in crisis to benefit from counseling?

Not at all. While counseling provides vital support during acute crises, it is equally effective as a proactive tool for personal growth, stress management, navigating life transitions, strengthening relationships, and improving self-awareness.

How do I know if we are a good fit?

The therapeutic alliance—the relationship between you and your counselor—is one of the most significant factors in successful therapy. We begin with a free 15-minute consultation call to discuss your needs, answer your questions, and ensure you feel comfortable. If my practice isn't the right match, I am always happy to provide trusted referrals.

Telehealth Logistics & Privacy

Is online video therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes. Extensive clinical research demonstrates that telemental health therapy is just as effective as traditional office visits for treating anxiety, depression, stress, and life transitions. Many clients prefer telehealth because it eliminates commute time and allows them to receive support from the comfort and privacy of their own space.

What technology do I need for telehealth sessions?

You will need a reliable internet connection, a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone equipped with a working camera and microphone. Sessions take place through a secure, web-based portal—no complex software downloads required.

Is telehealth therapy secure and private?

Yes. All video sessions and electronic communications are conducted through encrypted, HIPAA-compliant platforms designed specifically for healthcare providers. Your personal information, clinical notes, and session audio/video are strictly protected by federal and state privacy laws.

Where can I attend my sessions?

You must be in a private, quiet space free from distractions where you can speak openly (ex.: a private room at home or an office with the door closed). For safety and legal reasons, you cannot attend sessions while driving or operating a motor vehicle.

Why must I be physically located in AZ, IN, MN, or OH during sessions?

Professional counseling licensure laws require therapists to be licensed in the state where the client is physically located at the time of service. Even if you reside in Arizona, if you are temporarily traveling out-of-state to a non-licensed state during your appointment, we cannot legally conduct the session.

What happens if our internet connection drops during a session?

Tech hiccups happen! If our video connection is interrupted, I will attempt to re-connect through the secure portal for 2–3 minutes. If the connection cannot be restored, I will immediately call your phone number on file so we can continue or safely conclude our session.

Fees, Insurance & Practice Policies

Do you accept health insurance?

Mindful Tide Counseling PLLC operates as a private pay (out-of-network) practice. I do not bill health insurance plans directly. This model ensures your complete privacy, eliminates insurance-mandated mental health diagnoses, and gives us full freedom to determine the pace and length of your care.

Can I use HSA/FSA funds?

Yes. You may use Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards to pay for services.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a written estimate of your expected medical and counseling costs prior to beginning services. You can review our full disclosure on the Good Faith Estimate Notice page.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please provide at least 24 hours advance notice. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, or missed appointments, will be charged the standard full session fee.
